US business entities by state
52 jurisdictionsEach state links its filing department — the Secretary of State, the department of commerce and consumer affairs in Hawaii, or the Department of the Treasury in New Jersey — so a count traces to the office that keeps the record. A Secretary of State search typically returns an entity’s status, formation date and registered agent.

54How business entities by state are counted
Every figure ties back to a government department — most often a Secretary of State business services or corporations division, but also a state treasury or department of commerce and consumer affairs. Netstate reads the business filings those offices publish, so a count of business entities reflects the official register, not an estimate. Those records commonly show status, formation date and registered agent for each entity. A company that operates in another state may also appear there as a foreign entity.
A dash means that register’s records are not loaded yet — the row is listed rather than given an estimate. Figures are read from the public records on each register’s own cadence, so a jurisdiction that files new companies updates as its source publishes. Field provenance is documented in the methodology; request a correction if a figure looks wrong.
